چکیده

Route instructions for pedestrians are usually better understood if they include references to landmarks, andmoreover, these landmarks should be as salient as possible. In this paper, we present an approach for automatically deriving a mathematical model of salience directly from route instructions given by humans. Each possible landmark that a person can refer to in a given situation is modelled as a feature vector, and the salience associated with each landmark can be computed as a weighted sum of these features. We use a ranking SVM method to derive the weights from route instructions given by humans as they are walking the route. The weight vector, representing the person’s personal saliencemodel, determineswhich landmark(s) are most appropriate to refer to in new situations. Deriving Salience Models from Human Route Directions

We present an approach to derive individual preferences in the use of landmarks for route instructions in a city environment. Each possible landmark that a person can refer to in a given situation is modelled as a feature vector, and the preference (or salience) associated with the landmark can be computed as a weighted sum of these features. The weight vector, representing the person’s persona...

Finding the Return Path: Landmark Position Effects and the Influence of Perspective

Much research has been done on how people find their way from one place to another. Compared to that, there is less research available on how people find back from the destination to their origin. We first present theoretical approaches to perceptual and cognitive processes involved in finding a return path, including concepts, such as visibility, structural salience, and allocentric versus ego...

"Turn Left after the WC, and Use the Lift to Go to the 2nd Floor" - Generation of Landmark-Based Route Instructions for Indoor Navigation

People in unfamiliar environments often need navigation guidance to reach a destination. Research has found that compared to outdoors, people tend to lose orientation much more easily within complex buildings, such as university buildings and hospitals. This paper proposes a category-based method to generate landmark-based route instructions to support people’s wayfinding activities in unfamili...

The effect of linguistic and visual salience in visual world studies

Research using the visual world paradigm has demonstrated that visual input has a rapid effect on language interpretation tasks such as reference resolution and, conversely, that linguistic material-including verbs, prepositions and adjectives-can influence fixations to potential referents. More recent research has started to explore how this effect of linguistic input on fixations is mediated ...

Interpreting Motion Expressions in Route Instructions Using Two Projection-Based Spatial Models

This paper explores the applicability of two formal models of spatial relations, Double Cross and RfDL3-12, to interpret some typical expressions that people use for describing a route. The relations in these two models allow the qualitative representation of the location and spatial extent of a landmark as seen from a route segment. We explore the correspondence between the relations in these ...
